a create you own character would be great but it will probably be complicated to put into the game, so you should probably go with choosing between each of the main TOME characters. Let each character have their own storyline. and when the player (us, the wonderful fans) finishes all storylines, a Final Chapter will open. Kinda like Sonic Adventure 1 and 2.

wow sorry for the reposts, i dont know why that happened.

One underrated game that really took me by surprised was called Wanderlust: Rebirth. It's better than a side scroller, and is more engaging than a turn based game. I'm sure that you would be able to make a number of presets for customization on characters and their powers. Not to mention you could probably let the community pitch in similar to Steam's workshop. Hell, even I made sprites and sprite comics back in the day. It isn't something difficult to do, albeit time consuming. I just know that having a massive overworld to explore with bosses and quests of it's own, in addition to dungeons to explore by yourself and with friends, and some procedurally generated aspects (dungeon layout changes each time you play it based on probabilities and such) is hella awesome concept.

Now, I was with TOME since TTA, and honestly, I was devastated when TTA ended, and only slightly excited for TOME until I actually got into it. I'd have loved to see the original completed before there was a reboot, but you can't have everything, you know?
If I got to choose what type of game you made, I'd either want it RPG style, or I'd want it in the form of an interactive episode, like you did in some of the TTA episodes. The RPG style would fit the best in TOME, in my humble opinion, since it would allow travelling through TOME, and it would give a use to the abilities of the characters.
And now, I thought of the interactive episode idea because I though the X-Cell (Not sure if I'm getting this one right, forgive me, it's been a while.) race was pretty fun, because you had to have a skilled mouse hand to finish the episode and find out what happened next. When it comes to the fans like me that have been with you since TTA, they'd probably appreciate the nostalgia of an interactive episode. Hell, maybe combine the two and make it like an episode with an interactive battle sequence.

Another direction you could go that I just thought of is a fighter kinda game. That would be another way to utilize the characters' attacks. I still personally would prefer an RPG, interactive episode, or an interactive RPG episode. Never could get the hang of fighters...

With an RPG style, I'd love to see character customization. That's what puts most of the fun into RPGs, making your own story, living your own adventure. If that can't be done, then I'd rather see the interactive episode or the interactive RPG episode.

TL;DR = My ideas for this are: RPG with a custom character, interactive episode, or interactive episode with RPG battle elements. Fighter is doable, but not personally preferred.

as a fan of tome and your other works, i think that sticking with the customized characters would be good- at the very least a customized character look and a choice of one or two classes. This could work like having the 1-9 keys on the keyboard as attacks, with 1 being using your weapon and the rest being split with four skills per class (2-5 would be your first class choice, 6-9 would be the other.) This way, you could simply create a custom sprite with two preset sets of skills.

As for gameplay style, a side scrolling RPG style with live combat would work best. Turn based games become more like strategy than action, as you have time to prepare your next move, use items, or flee. This would make having many attacks and character choices pointless.

For other game material, the world of TOME would be the actual map. Characters like the main cast and some recurring side people like sniperwheel plus the hackers would probably be suitable. The story could consist of your character doing separate missions, hunting hackers like the main cast, or some other mission based plot line. Mission plot lines work best for RPGs, as they include getting rewards for finishing them, like XP and gold (if those are even used.)

Finally, I recommend the level system (get set amount of XP, level up.) This way you would get more health, mana, and attack power to fight stronger and more interesting enemies later.

However, if this doesn't work for any reason, the battle-network would also work assuming you include a storyline. (see below comments or any megaman game to see how this works.) Thats all I have for recommendations right now, so if you have any further questions about what we want to see in your game please ask!

I honestly think that game would be impossible, in order to make the evolution smoothly from just an exprience, to an interactive media, would take far too long to pull of well.

You can either make it an RPG where you can choose from hundreds of moves to be your own in a set or something, but the problem in itself lies there, all the moves would have to be pre-selected, animated, and most of all, NOT the player's idea. There could be an option to code you own ideas into your client of the game, but that would raise the problem of the "social" aspect as well as tempt those who are able to make an over powered move to do so.

There's a million more things but those are the basics, once development gets past this stage, then we worry about future stages.

The "Tales of" style sounds like a good idea. It sounds like a good match for the sort of battle style seen in the show. Also, I just love that battle style. Obviously, you'll have to have some way of including the battle grid system shown in the show as well.

I would enjoy the same level of personalization that the TOME concept includes. It should be an MMO with the same depth and level of options as the series. Of all, I like the PvP and quest challenges, as well as having to complete some strange action to GET the quest in the first place. Most of all, I don't want to just see you and the other compositors of the TOME series as just programmers. It would be pretty awesome going head to head and competing with the actual original TOME players. Hopefully some sort of chat like the one shown in each animation (possible voice connection instead of just text chat) as well as specific fonts based off of each personality. A destructable and interactive setting would be pretty nice as well. I know it's a lot to take in and a lot MORE to actually program and apply, but from what I've seen, you can accomplish this.

I've read some of the other ideas posted here and I think there's something to be said for (what appears to be) the overall consensus.
1. Custom characters would be cool (since that's one of the main selling points of T.O.M.E.), but it would be tricky to implement them in such a way as to not make it feel forced. I believe that this idea is workable, given a systematic approach to it.
Example: You first choose your overall character type (Organic, Machine, Magical, Wtf, etc).
After this, there could be a set of interchangeable parts to determine character appearance (Head, Hair, Torso, Shoulders, Arms, Hands, etc) Having seen stuff like this before, I believe that given several body slots with maybe 10-20 options for each would provide more than enough customization options to make the character feel like one's own.
As far as the class system goes, I think that making it similar to (how it seems in) T.O.M.E. wouldn't be that much of a hassle, given a bit of flexibility. This could work as a sort of point-buy system for your class. Example: Kirb is primarily a Swordsman but he probably has a point or two in Mage to be able to use his icicle shot and Dust Tornado. Maybe you gain access to a new "class point" every now and then and can use it to purchase a new ability for yourself depending on how many points you have in a given "class tree" already. I.e: Icicle shot is probably a tier 1 where Dust Tornado would be a tier 2, given that it is more powerful. Of course, investing points into multiple lower tier abilities would be allowed, but still count towards point total (Two tier 1 abilities still counts as having 2 points invested).
Now, I know that I and many others would definitely not turn down the opportunity to play as our favorite TOME characters. So maybe there could be instanced quests where we take control of them? (Commonly referred to as "RP Quests" in other games)
As with every game where you give players free-reign, balancing is a potential issue. Having access to 20 different class builds when only 3 of them are effective is something I'm sure most people who have ever touched an RPG are familiar with.
Hell, I wouldn't even really mind it if there weren't custom characters. If they have to be sacrificed for the sake of good story-telling then so be it.
In the end, as long as you put as much love into the game as the show, I'm not worried.

While i dont think you can make a HUGE game like Fire Emblem and other RPG's, i would personally imagine an MMORPG, you can have the same maps from the TOME guide you made, Also i think creating your own character would make a better experience, as seeing all the creative characters in the background you see in the show already. Another thing is that it doesnt have to be 3D just have it be side scrolling like AQW (its an MMORPG sidescroller) or Maplestory, but dont make them be sprites i think it should be more....how to say it, drawn i guess. most of the comments below go into ALOT more detail lol so im not entirely sure, also one idea is that you make your character but, for example alpha, the clothes he have on already dont count as items, it would have to be stuff u gather later on that count as items. Also please add alot of creativity, maybe even one of those things where u take a picture of urself and it changes it to something else, like for example a zombie app where u take ur picture and then the app will add blood and stuff by itself by locating the eyes and all that. for Races i guess it could be Human, Robot, Elf, Racoon, Biological (like that Slime guy who was partners with racoon), and other stuff, i cant really go much into detail considering making a game like TOME would be hard considering all the varient characters in the show that vary from a talking racoon to a robot with one wheel, to a dragon warrior, to a magical blue cat. Would take alot of creativity lol, I hope you can atleast make it Multi-player and a Make your own characer. Those are probably one of my personal minimum requirements. Sorry if this is long and thank you if u take this into consideration, and i play alot of online games so thats why the horrible spelling.

hmmmm....honestly spoken i dont hav alot of expirience with online games buuuut how about a action based sidescroller like elsword? instead of fixed characters fixed classes for example. Evry1 of them with different attack combos&skills of course. Wat do u think?

Not sure if youll see this as there is about 75 comments here, but whatever.
I think a TOME game should be a partial turn-based combat system(like Final Fantasy 4), Should have the different classes, and be an RPG. If its single-player only, then you can have the player be from alpha's POV or a OC that they create that will fit in to the story. If its a multiplayer, then the "Social-Networking" part of TOME will have much more apeal but it might be harder to create something like that, also in a multi-player the player should make their own characters that can fill certain roles and play a story-mode that is unique but borrows bits from the animated series. If you had enough manpower/resources you could instead create a game that has both. a Single player story that follows the plot of TOME and has you play as either Alpha or an OC, and a multi-player where you can social-network/fight other players and maybe even have some sort of story-mode for online players to go through.
Things like the safe-zone of sacturary, the mixed area like mech-city, and quests are also interesting features.
Thats just my opinion, wish you luck on the game & love the animated series!
PS:please excuse any misspellings and such.

I think it should be a single player RPG with a turn based combat system like Fire Emblem or Final Fantasy, The main protagonist of the game would be an original character whether preferably customize-able and the option to pick a custom class like Swordsman or Lightning mage or Magical Archer would be cool. It would be nice if the protagonist had his own party consisting of original characters not introduced into the series but if he was in a party with Alpha and the gang that would be pretty cool too. If it was an original party introduced you could use Alpha and co. as mentors or friendly rivals to your own party which you could face off against in the tournament or at other points during the game. Well these are just my thoughts and I'm sure whatever you decide on the game will turn out great. Love the Show.

definately game needs to be made of this multiplayer rpg create your own characters and definately battle system like tales of games but make it free roam enviroment instead of sidescrolling and alot of classes so everyone can play with what they feel comfortable with.

and make it free to play with the option of being able to spend money if u want but also make it so everyone can get the same stuff just the people who dont pay have to work for it

episode 7 was awesome can't wait for episode 8 i also have some ideas for a tome based game
