TOME Episode 04 and what lies ahead...

Posted by Kirbopher - May 30th, 2012

Took way longer than I thought, but it's done.

TOME Episode 04: "Fraggedquest" is released to Newgrounds, as well as the Traveler's Guide just for archival purposes. Thank you EVERYONE who helped put this episode together. I got wa too ambitious with it and it ended up being way longer than I expected, but I genuinely think it's our best one yet. Also, I apologize for any glitches in the animation and sound. I'm going to try and get the YouTube version completed next week and some of those issues will hopefully not be a problem anymore. Thanks for understanding and I hope you enjoyed the episode for what it is.

So people are probably immediately thinking, "when does Episode 05 come out?!" Well, the next step isn't that simple. Believe me, I'd LOVE to keep just making the episodes as I had originally planned and continue through the series like normal, however, that's probably not what's going to happen. While I appreciate everyone who's enjoyed the series so far, and even the people who weren't fans of it that offered critique to help it grow...the fact is, the show hasn't done well enough to immediately warrant continuation, nor is it helping me progress as an artist, as much as I was expecting it to. I love the story and characters; the prospect of going further with what I have planned and the appearance of new plot elements and characters is still an exciting thing for me, just as it must be to its fans. However, I need to make the next step in my career. I'm now over a full year out of college. The biggest things to my credit of noteworthiness are my contribution to Skullgirls, a bit of odd voiceover work here and there, and the ONE festival screening I had with Balancing Act that resulting in the freelance gig I'm currently working on. TOME, unfortunately, is not something that has done well enough for me to survive off of monetarily, nor has it caught on big enough in its popularity for IT to survive...at least, not yet.

Rest assured, I don't want to simply abandon TOME at this stage. I knew Episode 04 was going to be a checkpoint and I knew early on into production that there was a possibility of it being the last, hence why I went with a different story concept instead of my original script for Episode 04 (which has now been bumped up to 05). The next step I want to take with the series is something on a much bigger scale. I can't go into much detail, because what I have planned is still in very early stages and absolutely NOTHING in confirmed yet, but it's more than simply upping the quality of the animation. Down the line, I might even need your help. As soon as I have ANYTHING that I can share publicly, I'll let you know. In the meantime, I have a lot of work to do. My freelance gig needs tending so I can get it done within June and I may have another music video gig coming up soon. I'm not goin' anywhere yet, so keep it tuned.

Start a kickstarter. Now.

Not yet!

Loved the episode; worth the wait. Keep doing your shit with your own tempo.

Well like you said, as much as I want to say "WHEN DOES EPISODE 5 COME OUT?!" I can wait. And if you ever need help or short on a few VA's (highly doubt that) I can help.

Understood dude, I'm kinda in the same boat myself.

i have been a fan of yours since before brawl taunts or nin10doh and all i can say is do what you feel you need to do i truly enjoyed the episode enjoyed it beyond imagining im sure others will too if we give them time also your style has been getting better over the years im sure in the future more and more opportunities will open up

Dude, just do what you wanna do. You are an amazing artist, and as long as you are creating art, regardless if it's TOME or not, I personally will be satisfied with the masterpieces that you produce. When you stopped Parody Rangers, you came out with something I think was much, much better. So if you do stop TOME, as long as you continue producing wonderful pieces of work, I don't think your fans will be dissatisfied. I know I won't be.

Definately kickstart kirb!

Take your time, get your shit together, and survive. We'll be waiting for you when you get back.

How would the indicator be if TOME had become as popular as you had intended? Views on youtube, newgrounds?

If the episodes were much farther above only 100,000 views.

I know you're never short on voice actors, but if you need help, I would love to be a voice actor for the series.

Good luck Kirb, I'll be rooting for you.

Hello there. Been a big fan of yours since I 1st watched the 1st "Nin10doh!" and "Parody Rangers" vids. And I must say that you do amazing work and only continue to get better! :D And I always love seeing new flashes from you, as they are usually ALWAYS very enjoyable to watch! ^_^

Of course; I understand that you are now at that point of life where you must make choices to help you in your future. So, I can understand you wanting to focus more on what can help prepare you for it and not on Flash Animation, regardless of how much you enjoy doing it and love what you create WHILE doing it. Afterall, Flash is really just a fun/enjoyable hobby and nothing more. Even if it helps get you noticed, it's STILL not going to be the thing that helps pay the bills or puts food on the table. And THAT'S what you need to truly worry about. However, it would be wrong to become obsessed by this. When ppl obsess over something like this, regardless of how important it is, they tend to panic. And THAT would lead to your failure. And unlike a Video Game or being in the production stages of a new Animation. You CAN'T Start Over! It's your life and you only get 1. No retries, respawns, or continues!

All I can say is: That it's best to focus on what NEEDS to be done 1st, rather than what you WANT to be done. It's best to take care of things that will help you permantly settle into the rest of your life. However! If there is anything that you want done still weighing heavily on your mind, then it's best to take care of that while you still have time. Before things in life truly get into motion and get to overwhelming. Otherwise, you'll be filled w/ certain regret and become distracted by it. Thus, not being able to truly focus on what MUST be done to help settle you into your future!

Another important thing though, is to STILL take the time to enjoy yourself! Taking care of what can help prepare you for your future is very important, yes. But, once you estabilsh something concrete in that department, regardless of how little concrete it is, it's best to take time every now-and-then, to do the things that you ENJOY doing! Something that can take away your stress and rejuvinate you! Help find a balance in life. Between what's important to your life/future, and what's important to YOU! :D You wanting to continue TOME is a perfect example of what I'm saying.

Take care K!

I'd say you should make TOME into a movie. We'll all be waiting eagerly for the next episode, and I'm sure I'm speaking for all of us when I say that I hope that there is one. It would be heartbreaking to me to lose Gamecraze...

Understood. If its not helping as much as you thought it would, go ahead and take some time off from it, just make sure you dont abandon it altogether

Stay strong, my friend. If you must put TOME on hiatus then so be it. But, remember that you DO have talent, and you DO deserve much more attention, at least I believe so. I am sure that things will work out, just don't give up the fight.

while Im definitely not a total fan of TOME, I will say I did at least give them a chance, and the characters at least have grown on me. My suggestion is to not give up completely on it. consistency is a huge factor. scale down the episodes. maybe start a new story arc that allows you to make really small packed in episodes to keep things moving.

Glad to hear you're warming up to it, yeah I definitely don't wanna give up on it, I just wanna make a bigger step. I WAS also thinking about maybe splitting up episodes into shorter pieces or something, but yeah Episode 04 was a bit of a checkpoint so maybe I could do something like that.

Well that's sad to hear. I definitely have enjoyed the series so far and I'd love to see you continue. But I seem to enjoy most things you do and I'll enjoy whatever you decide to make in the future.

If you need help for TOME, I can always promote on my comedy music podcast. I did play two of your tracks and a recent piece by Shadyvox last week, so anything to help promote the series, I'll do it! And, of course, if you're in short need of characters or voices, let me know and I'll be there posthaste!

Thanks for telling us viewers what's going on. You probably already know this, but I think I speak for all of your fans when I say that we are OK with a hiatus, or whatever you plan this to be; but you haven't been shy about voicing your love for TOME (which is a good thing), so don't give up!

I watched TOME last night just because I had no idea what it was and I must say...I don't think I've ever been this into an online animated series before. I usually just lose interest, but not this time. I was glued to the screen the whole time! Great work!
