The Return to Otakon

Posted by Kirbopher - August 3rd, 2010

Last weekend was QUITE a ride.

I haven't been to Otakon in Baltimore, Maryland in about 3 years. It was the first convention I ever went to back in 2005 and I've gone to TONS more ever since then. It was blissful trip down memory lane for me to be back on the Baltimore city streets and trekking around the convention center when I was still in High School. So much has happened since then, the con itself felt both like it had changed and grown, but still held the same sentimental value I always liked about it. Wasn't without its fair share of bullcrap, but ANY convention experience comes packaged with it unless you go completely on your own...and that's no fun! I was in good company, between my friends from SVA who made a killing at Artist Alley, the Yu-Gi-Oh! Abridged gang who made a killing at the Dealer's Room, the crew behind the One Piece Podcast and some of my actor friends, I thought it might be a task to divide up so much time to so many groups of people. But, it ended up being a glorious experience. I laughed my ass off every night with my roommates, had some tasty chow, picked up some free swag, even networked a bit with the three measly business cards I had left. Safe to say it kicked ass.

Con season's almost over, all's left is AnimeEvolution up in Vancouver. I think it's okay to mention here, so I'll announce that the screening for NiN10Doh! to the 64th Power! at AE will be on Saturday night at 8:30 in Panel Room 2. There might be time for a brief Q&A but most of the time will be dedicated to the screening itself. I'll also be at the Yu-Gi-Oh! Abridged Panel, same day and same room, at 11 in the morning. I'm beginning to get back completed segments from the animation team and they're lookin' fantastic, not to mention hilarious. Downside, I'm pretty sure some of the segments will be WIP; at the very least in animatic form with the complete audio, or possible uncolored/yet to be cleaned-up. Either way, we should have the full-length collab to show even if it's not 100% finished. The final version should be put on Newgrounds before August is up.

My time for vacationing is nearly up, with only about a month left before I head back to school. This upcoming Friday, I'll be heading to NYC to hand in the first bits of material for my thesis. My storyboard's done, the character voices are recorded and cut together for timing, the designs have been set and I'm currently working on the rough animatic. Tryin' to stay ahead of the game, since this baby'll end up probably running about 7-8 minutes. It'll take a LOT of hard work, so I'll do my absolute best.

Stay tuned for more!

oh boy

i heard there were fire alarms and long lines

There was a fire evacuation on Saturday, only lasted an hour. Lines were okay.

I'm down to 15 days before I go to school, but atlest I start on a thursday! Bad news though are the gangsters trying to woop my ass. Oh well :)

Youch, what city're you in?

I love it how you act like your so important.

Posting cartoons on a website is incredibly important, like life-changing important. Really.

@ saltysalts

i love how you act like your such a great troll ;3

Just.. Move to japan and find out it isn't like how everybody sees it.

I'd be lost in Japan.

Otakon has gotten too big for its own good unless the trend has died down in recent years. More and more people show up each time and the convention hall remains the same size. >.<;

They actually rented out the Hilton building next to it for a couple extra panel rooms, so they HAVE been extending it. It's not nearly as "big" anymore, AnimeExpo kinda overshadows it now.

What, how do you get these screening rooms and shit at these cons? They just give them out to whoever has the money to pay for it?

I e-mailed 'em about the stuff I do, they were interested in having me as a guest, then I told them I would have the collab to showcase and they scheduled it into the convention's events.

hot damn I'm excited!!

Sweet. B)

My brother's gone every year for like the last 6 years I think since he lives in the city, I would have gone but it would have been way too overwhelmingly, irritatingly nyan~ for me

It'll be my first time in the country so I'm lookin' forward to it. Thankfully my awkward run-ins with weeaboo-types have been few and far between.

missed u at SDCC this year, kirbo :'(

Agggh I saw the photos, you guys looked like you had a badass time. NEXT YEAR I promise.

You're gonna upload that thesis of yours to NG after you presented it right?
I'd love to see it.

Actually, more than likely, it won't be up online at all, let alone NG. If I end up screening it at animation festivals then it'll be disqualified if it's uploaded.

i always wanted to go to a convention but they were never close enough. I guess i could ask my parents to take me to one, but i don't know of which ones i should go to.
What do you recommend Kirb?

Any really, they're just plain fun!

Hey i know it's not a convention but i know a fun place to visit if you're interested.
It's right in my hometown of Archbold, Ohio. It's called Sauder village and it's like a pioneer village. My family owns it so i think of it as my own kind of convention.
Here's the link to the website if you want to check it out.

just wondering, have you ever had animation ideas in highschool that you couldn't do because of the time?
I'm havin' a little trouble trying to develope my skillz ._."

I've wanted to make cartoons and games since I was in Elementary school, but it was more about lack of skill as opposed to lack of time. So instead I spent that time planning out what they'd be like.

Good luck dude! And you always do ur best on all ur cartoons!

Thanks a bunch :]

I think I have 20 days till school... Or sooner?

what happened to Project DCK?

damn wish i can go 2 ae butt ill get lost -.- oh n hav a awesome vacation while u still hav time

Ya know, I'd love to go to a convention with you one time. I've only been to Otakon and Anthrocon, but I haven't really had many friends to be with at Otakon. I kept missing everyone and some not even knowing they were there til AFTER the fact.
