Pluggin' Stuff + The Fun is Over

Posted by Kirbopher - October 11th, 2008

First off, few things to point out:

-Give a listen to Kira's Documentary on Newgrounds. It's a good listen during worktime and has some rather interesting stuff. Her editing actually prevented me from sounding like a COMPLETE moron during my segments, but nothing that detracts from it overall. It runs for a good hour, but it's pretty neat and worth hearing.

-Similar note, go play Swain's game. He put a ridiculous amount of time into it and you'll be addicted in minutes. Go.

-Buy Kirby Super Star: Ultra for the DS. Holy fucking shit I love this game even more than I did 10+ years ago. Meta Knight's GALAXYWIDE KILLING SPREE Mode is the most ridiculously fun thing you'll ever play in a Kirby game.

-Sailor Moon Abridged is funny as hell, go watch it.

Now for more relavent matters.

Before anyone gets the wrong idea, it was NOT my decision to put more than one part of the Parody Rangers Movie on the front page at the same time. I was assuming they would simply be replaced one after the other a la Edible Castle. I don't know, nor am I hoping for, ALL four of the "episodes" I had to split Part 1 into to be on the front page at the same time, so I'm holding out for only two being up at once. What disappointed me further during my solid month of trying everything to get the scenes combined, I couldn't even get it down to just TWO halves and have those on the front page like Max's cartoon not long ago. Sadly I couldn't even get THAT to work. Ugh.

Submission of the content itself aside...the fun is gone. Ask me a year ago when I was excited about just simply how FUN it was gonna be to work on this massive thing...let alone the sponsorship; hell, that wasn't even part of the picture by that point. I didn't think money was gonna be a gigantic issue for me at the time, I just wanted to make this ridiculous feature-length movie, getting every stereotypical internet-scum joke outta my system in this final NG-audience cartoon, work on my animation skill and just have a good laugh with my friends about it. After several things happening, with the incredibly (predictably) bad feedback I've gotten on the parts released so far being only the LATEST thing, all of the fun I thought I was gonna get out of doing this has been sucked out. I'm sure there's a few out there that're taking sweet, sadistic pleasure in the fact that I'm stuck in this rut.

When it gets right down to it, I flat out DON'T want to do this thing anymore. I wanna move on to bigger and better things already. The problem is that, and hell even people tons more respectable in this place have told me this, I'd be fucking CRAZY to pass up sponsorship money, regardless of what the content I'm producing is. The fact of the matter is still that I -need- that kind of funding I've been offered for this now-considered "crap" project. Part 1's ending, similiar to the last episode I did of TTA, could almost be considered an "ending" if it were left by itself and I had just given up...but hey, look! I'm in a lose-lose situation again! I'm gonna get people saying "good, stop working on the movie. It's a piece of shit and I don't wanna see it crowing the front page anymore, asswipe" AND I'm gonna get people saying "What, you're gonna quit? AGAIN? When there's money involved this time? God, you're such a pussy."

What's even worse that I really have like, virtually NO room or justification to even be complaining about this in the first place. When it gets down to it, I reaped what I had sewn for the last two years when I started this in the first place. Long story short, I'm really conflicted on what to do next. All of Part 1 will still be released and put out by the end of the month and $00pah NiN10Doh! will still be finished as well. I've gotten suggestions by some people to trash and/or rework the remainder of the gigantic script that would make up the theoretical Parts 2 & 3 of the entire hour long movie, to shorten it and just be done with it sooner. I'm a bit shakey on that route but not completely against doing it. There's a lot of confusion going on for me with this and it's kind of causing a problem...for everyone, let's face it.

I'll probably be sending out a few e-mails to try and find a "resolution" for this. Next week I'll be making a post regarding what I -actually- wanna be doing right now. I think there's a few of my peers around these parts that'll be semi-interesting in hearing about that. Bear with me folks.

Comments

Well, do what you think is best and your true fans will support your decision.

btw - Kirby Super Star Ultra and the Master Mind game are great XD played them both and im almost done with KSSU.

the metaknight thing is alright but it gets old after a while

i thought the revenge of the king and helper battles were better. i cant figure out how to copy abilities with tac though!!!

I only tried Helper to Hero once, with Bonkers, because Hammer is fucking brutal.

In regard to your first paragraph...I'm sure Tom's just hyped up about the series and wants to get people to know that this is more than just a series...He'll probably go back to the usual routine once a good number of people see your first 2 parts.

Well...bad feedback is natural....I'm starting to get some of that now too...it hurts...so I sympathize.

Dude...you are an artist...you've got complete FREEDOM to go for those BIGGER and BETTER things. Ignore all those pleading fan mail and just go on with your life.
They may hunt you down and track your home...but for now...Newgrounds can only post and PM messages by the thousands. (and you can disable your ability to recieve comments or messages...just ask Tom and you'll only get messages from the NG's staff). note: The PM thing I'm not entirely sure on.

I am incredibly amazed that you and your friends spent 2 long years making a movie purely out of enjoyment. For that I applaud you. It makes me happy that you and your friends spent so much time just to entertain us. I am grateful by your dedication and love for art and animation.

Good Luck...let the Muses be with you.

Whoa, whoa. 2 years ago I STARTED Parody Rangers, I only started working on the feature movie right around when 2008 started. I appreciate the complements either case, just wanna get the facts straight.

Logically you're correct...but there's still the factor of my being in need of funding. It's not as simple as "Fuck this, I quit! Time to do something better!" because of everything else surrounding it. Otherwise, yeah, it'd be the same as when I moved past TTA and started doing other things. This case is bigger than just that, unfortunately.

Okay...gotta read those fine print better...
Hmm...asside from the DVD suggestion to help earn funds..
Some people a paypal donation box...it's a long shot.

But thanks for all your hard work.
Your still young dude...funding can be your focus for the next couple of years...then you can start your next big project.

Take Care Man ^_^

I can't sell DVDs for a ton of very obvious reasons. Paypal donations wouldn't be unheard of, but let's be realistic here: how many people would do that?

The fact you werent digging it is pretty obvious, part 2 was incredibly unfunny, even by your standards. Its something when i can notice a dip like that in something i already dont like but feel compelled to watch anyway.

Oh, no. That's just because it apparantly wasn't funny to begin with. I wrote the script FOREVER ago, recorded the dialogue with everyone a bit before summer started and then started animating when it began. At the TIME I was digging it and having a lotta fun...

If their sponsoring you it's not like NG isn't going to plug you harder than others. Just roll with it being on the front page, it wont be there forever.

TL;DR VErsion.

-Didn't mean two parady rangers to be on frontpage at same time. thought they would be up 1 at a time.

-Bored of making the series, Doesn't want to do it anymore, regardless of the money involved, wants too move onto bigger and better things.

Meh, im not a fan of parody rangers, i've never watched it but i havn't actually ever wanted to, just like citisen cane, i'm really just not arsed.

Good luck with future projects.

It's not a matter of boredom in ANY respect, trust me. It's a matter of feeling guilty, not being artistically satisfied, being LOOKED DOWN UPON for doing it, and simply not getting any overall enjoyment out of creating it.

I've spent nearly an hour trying to figure out what to say here....and frankly i don't know what to say or how to say it. I -feel- that you should do the movie for the money. And instead of thinking 'Almost there, almost got the money!' You should think ' Almost done...just have to finish so i can start Game Savers'. Ugh......There IS a lesson in this, and that is to not set yourself up for something you can't do. I'm learning that the hard way now, and it is not something i'd reccomend to anyone. You probably are going through the same thing (but in a different way).

The only thing i TRULY agree on is exactly what thebYssman said:

"Do what you think is best and your true fans will support your decision."

I for one will not care if you decide to stop making the GGPR movie. It's very good and i love it , don't get me wrong, but i just don't want to see the artist who created it to sink into a hole that no-one can get them out of. I sincerely feel sorry for you and i hope that you can make a decision that is right for you. I really want you to succeed in your career and wish the best for you, your family and your friends.

A brief summary: I will not care/judge you if you decide to discontinue the movie and i do not want you to just give up on everything.

Do the right thing Kirb.

All fair points, but the main thing that both you guys were mistaken on is that my decision is NOT boding on the fans whatsoever. Aside from simply them watching the parts as they come out and accomplishing what I'm BEING sponsored for, as far as myself goes they're completely unrelated. If you start doing things "for the sake of the fans" then in a lot of cases you'd be even worse off than I am now.

It's quite interesting that in the last two days two particular artists have made front-page-posts about not being popular enough or feeling overlooked.

But you, on the other hand, are well known and popular to the point of sponsorship and double-front-page.
I feel that you've been fairly brave to highlight the other end of spectrum: It ain't always fun at the top.

I believe that there is a very important lesson here for all of us.

That's what it used to be. I gave Parody Rangers a shot because it was blatantly obvious that TTA wasn't succeeding, and I managed to get where I am now because of it...but the fact that I made GGPR because I -wanted- it to do well and get a lot of attention on Newgrounds was a HUGE mistake on my part.

You're gonna shorten the movie?
*Sigh*
If you really think it's best....
And wait, people don't like the Parody Ranger's Movie? What kind of idiots are they?!?! It's brilliant...

But, I digress, you have the freedom to do whatever you want. Just know that at least I am happy you're making the Parody Rangers... which really probably doesn't matter... as you don't know me...

I'm not GOING to shorten it, it's merely an idea a friend of mine gave me to try and work around this. I don't know what I'm going to do yet. Also, there's PLENTY of people that don't like Parody Rangers for perfectly justifyable reasons.

I really agree with kirby star ultra for ds is awsome but i think it's to short or probbally i finished it in one day because i wasted my whole day on it lol! by the way what is your favorite power up in the game. mine is the bird or mirror and di love ur you kno if u turn the wheel power up to a helper you can ride the helper anyways awsome vids

Lol, if you dont like what your doing with your current flashes, then stop, and work on what you do like, fuck the sponsorship money, grab a job at a retails store and work on your shit over night.

in short,, BE A FUCKING MAN.

One, I don't have time to work a retail job while I'm at school. Hell, if I end up getting an (probably unpaid) internship I'm seeking out, then that's even less time. This isn't about me "being a man" more than it is about how to approach the rest of what I'm stuck with.

I like your parody rangers flashes. But the movie is bad IMO, the parts should be stuck together! It doesn't fit watching one part at a time and then waiting. It's pissing me off! Try fixing the movie, it's the only way it's gonna be good. And I was surprised when both Parody Rangers parts where on the same time at the frontage. And like Mindchamber said, don't be a pussy. Although I'd rather want to see the movie in one flash complete! It's still your choice and you should go with it.

Go back and read about how I spent a month trying to put all of the scenes together, so I wouldn't have to explain this crap to you and everyone else in the world, over and over and over again.

Also, don't tell me to "not be a pussy" if you're not even agreeing with what the guy said in the first place. He's telling me to just quit and stop if I don't wanna do it; you're telling me TO do it so you still get what YOU want in the end.

Your submissions seem to have been in a decline ever since you started to get cold feet like this. What the hell happened?

Another thing COULD be that you might be trying too hard, with TTA, the episodes would make me want to keep on watching but when you got to a season finale it would feel a little "overdone". I get the same feeling from the Parody Rangers movies these days.

*insert Pink Floyd's: money*

If only I knew how you felt. It must suck to be stuck in a rut like this. Don't worry though. As long as you fight through the rough times, you'll get to experience the good times.

On the bright side, Game Savers looks FANTASTIC. The characters look very fresh and have a good look to them. And that's only looking at the pictures.

Kirb, I may not be as big a person as you, but i know this, the people that try to put you down just can't, and you're trying to think that they are, you have the right to decide wether you want to prove the flamers right and end the whole movie, or you can stick it to their face and finish part one. So who cares if part 1's scenes stay on the front page for more than a month, big deal, you should ask yourself wether to end the thing that helped make you make the parody rangers in the first place, or stand up for yourself and finish it. It's your choice, and i hope you make the right one.

...and what's "the right one" in your mind? That doesn't even have anything to DO with it. Who said they're gonna stay on the front page for more than a month, and Part 1 IS finished so that's not even an issue here...and then what's "the thing that helped make me make it in the first place"?

I, for one, thought the movie is great and hilarious. I especially love the nostalgia from my childhood, and overall was just great. My point in all of this is, not everyone hates your movies, in fact, the majority like it. Generally, if some one likes something they won't really leave feedback, but if someone doesn't like something, they are more likely to say something about it. The 4.21 rating for the movies should be indication enough that not everyone hates it.

My personal hope is that you finish up Parody Rangers how you intended it, just for the sake that it disappoints me whenever someone gives up on a good project partway through. However, I look forward to your other projects, so if you cut Parody Rangers short to get to these projects faster, it wouldn't crush my spirit.

Look, just post/create the rest of the movie. Who cares about some bad feedback? There's always that portion of the people who are going to hate your stuff no matter what you make and I'm not referring to those who don't like you as a person. You can't please all the people all the time, as the old saying goes.

And of COURSE you're not going to think what you wrote a long time ago is funny because you've read it a hundred times by now. It's like hearing the same joke over and over again and after hearing it a hundredth time you think it sucks. It doesn't mean other people OTHER people new to the material won't find it funny. I know I like the bit with Splooge (or however you spell it).

Just stop trying so hard with everything. Stop trying to please the majority. Stop trying to be "fair" with the other Newgrounds posters just because your stuff got promoted on the front page other there's. Stop putting so much stress on yourself and just f**king make the movie. People will like it, not everyone but enough. Just relax and forget about the money and stuff. Don't make the connection to funding and your work. Trust me, it'll only spoil what could be a great thing just because you put a dollar sign any where near it.

I won't lie to you: I've never seen any of the GGPR movies nor do I really have a huge interest in them. But you seem conflicted and the nosy bastard in me feels obligated to "help". My advice is blunt: swallow your pride and bite the bullet. If your getting paid, you have to finish what you started or your credibility will plummet and never recover. Then you can go on and do what ever the hell you want. Or not. It's not in the least my place to tell you what to do, so this is my two cents.

PS: Let the prism rangers here clear your mind
<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yDuiSgh-01U">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yDuiSg h-01U</a>

You're a great voice actor and your animation skills have improved quite a bit. However, your humor has declined since GGPR 3. You didn't think this through, and now you put yourself in a trajectory that you can't escape from. As for the movie so far: it's not as funny as the first two, but it had its moments.
